William Montague Browne (1823–1883) was an Irish-born journalist, Confederate politician, and brigadier general.
Confederate Service: A strong supporter of the Southern cause, he moved South when Georgia seceded. He served as an aide-de-camp to Confederate President Jefferson Davis. In 1862, he was the Acting Secretary of State for the Confederacy.
Military Service: He was appointed a brigadier general in the Confederate States Army in November 1864. He served as the Director of Conscription in Georgia and aided in the defense of Savannah.
